What it actually covers
It covers sudden, unexpected mechanical failure of the components listed below. It does not cover parts that wear out through normal use.
We’d rather set that out plainly than have you find out at the garage.
- Braking system
- Casings
- Cooling systems
- Electrics
- Clutch — cable, cylinders, pedal assembly
- Engine ECU
- Engine internals
- Fuel system
- Gearboxes and transmissions
- Ignition system
- Flywheels and drive plates
- Oil seals and gaskets
- Steering column
- Suspension — wheel bearings
- Turbocharger
Only manufacturer-approved parts. Anything not explicitly listed is not covered.
What it doesn’t
- Normal wear and tear, and parts at the end of their life
- Routine servicing, and any part replaced during a service
- Consumables — oil, filters, brake pads, discs, wiper blades, bulbs
- Tyres, glass, paintwork, bodywork and trim
- Damage from an accident, misuse, or lack of servicing
- Faults present before the plan started
- Anything repaired without an authorisation number
Older cars pay a share of parts
On higher-mileage and older vehicles the plan pays a proportion of the parts cost. Labour is unaffected. The scale is based on whichever is reached first, age or mileage:
| Age or mileage | Your contribution to parts |
|---|---|
| Up to 6 years / 60,000 miles | None |
| Over 6 years / 60,000 miles | 20% |
| Over 7 years / 70,000 miles | 30% |
| Over 8 years / 80,000 miles | 40% |
| Over 9 years / 90,000 miles | 50% |
If something goes wrong
- 1Stop driving the car if continuing would make the damage worse.
- 2Call the claims line on 0800 044 3131 before any work starts. No repair can be authorised afterwards.
- 3The repairer gets an authorisation number, does the work, and the plan pays them directly — you pay the £50 excess and any parts contribution.
Repairs are carried out by Händler Protect appointed repairers. Work started without an authorisation number cannot be paid for.
How to make sure a claim succeeds
A handful of things decide whether a claim goes through smoothly. Know these before you need them:
- Tell us within 14 days of noticing a fault, and ask for the repair to start within 30 days of that.
- Stop driving as soon as a fault is apparent — carrying on can turn a straightforward repair into damage that isn’t covered.
- Keep the service book stamped with invoices, including proof of any cambelt change when one was due — this is what makes a claim easy to approve.
- The plan covers sudden, unexpected failure, not gradual wear — so in the first 30 days it doesn’t cover deterioration that’s simply down to the car’s age.
- The most a claim can ever pay out is the car’s current market value.
- Changed your mind? You have 30 days from the start of the plan to cancel it.
The honest summary
This is a repair plan, not an insurance policy — it’s an agreement with us, and it is not regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. It’s there for the sudden, expensive failures. It isn’t there to replace worn brake pads or a tired clutch, and we won’t pretend otherwise.
